Challenge the stats

Challenge the Stats and Concerts at First present a free concert on Saturday, February 24 at 7 p.m. celebrating diversity in the classical performing arts. The concert will feature 11 high caliber African American and Latino instrumentalists, including performances by harpist Angelica Hairston, a cello sextet lead by Clayton State University cello instructor Ismail Akbar, a world-premiere composition for harp and tenor by Joel Thompson, and commentary from Dr. Paula Grissom, Chair of Music at Spelman College.

A $10 pre-concert Dinner and Discussion opens the event at 5:30 p.m. as NPR Personality (WABE 90.1 FM) Lois Reitzes moderates a panel of Atlanta arts leaders discussing tangible thoughts and ideas on creating a more diverse, inclusive and equitable arts field.

Please join us for an in-depth view and discussion of the works of Cuban artist, Juan Manuel Vazquez Iglesias, as seen from the perspective of the artist’s nephew, Guillermo Santana, and of fellow Cuban artist Alexi Torres.

7:00 – 8:30 Presentation and discussion from Cuban-American Artist Alexi Torres and Guillermo Santana, co-founder of the Vazquez Cuba Exhibit in Atlanta.

The Emory University Faculty Jazz Sextet led by program director Gary Motley is comprised of artist-educators whose backgrounds provide a wealth of industry experience and expertise. Their mission is to educate students about the rich tradition of American jazz while providing insight into the creative process through performance and analysis. The ensemble includes (from L-R) Randy Hunter, saxophones, Bob Lewis, trumpet and trombone, Gary Motley, piano, Justin Chesarek, drums and percussion, Dan Baraszu, guitar and Chris Riggenbach, bass.
