Scripture for the Day: Psalm 33:12-22
Happy is the nation whose God is the Lord, the people whom he has chosen as his heritage. The Lord looks down from heaven; he sees all humankind. From where he sits enthroned he watches all the inhabitants of the earth—he who fashions the hearts of them all, and observes all their deeds. A king is not saved by his great army; a warrior is not delivered by his great strength. The war horse is a vain hope for victory, and by its great might it cannot save. Truly the eye of the Lord is on those who fear him, on those who hope in his steadfast love, to deliver their soul from death, and to keep them alive in famine. Our soul waits for the Lord; he is our help and shield. Our heart is glad in him, because we trust in his holy name. Let your steadfast love, O Lord, be upon us, even as we hope in you.
Psalm 33 reminds us that God is trustworthy. While the world turns its attention to kings, armies, warriors, and warhorses to save us, the Psalmist knows that our ultimate hope and deliverance is found only in the Lord. The Scriptures are filled with exhortation upon exhortation upon exhortation about putting our trust in God. Anytime we the word “faith” in the Bible we are really just seeing a synonym for the word “trust”. To believe is to trust. To confess is to trust. To fear the Lord and to hope in God is to trust. We are called to trust God because God is trustworthy. Ernest Hemingway once wrote, “The best way to find out if you can trust somebody is to trust them.” Certainly this is true in our relationship with God. We will find out if we can trust God by trusting God.
Today, I would invite you to take a moment to pray these short prayers. Perhaps you would pray them all at once or pray them over the course of the day. They are prayers that form in us a deeper trust in God.
God, I trust in your unconditional love and acceptance of me. Amen.
God, I trust that in life and in death I belong to you. Amen.
God, I trust that the value of my life is so much more than my social standing, my productivity, and my financial portfolio. Amen.
God, I trust that the trials you allow me to face will be redeemed and provide an opportunity to witness to your faithfulness. Amen.
God, I trust in Jesus Christ and I trust in his faith in you. Amen.
God, I trust that your vision of justice, humility, and kindness must be my vision. Amen.
God, I trust in the power of your Holy Spirit to give me exactly what I need for the facing of this hour. Amen.
