Today’s Scripture
Today’s Author
Ben Fletcher
In this text, we find the apostle Paul doing some major leg work to distinguish the work of the ancient Jewish Law against the work done through Christ’s death and resurrection. In some ways, this distinction might feel superfluous to us today as many Christians are so culturally removed from any expectation to observe Torah law. However, in the time of the early Church, circumcision and the observance of the law were the hot button issues of the day. Therefore, Paul’s claims that Jesus, rather than the Law, fulfills the promise given to Abraham was completely radical.
As if Paul was not radical enough, he then continues to state that “all are one in Christ Jesus.” There is no identity, status, or action that warrants preferential treatment before God. Therefore, not only is law observance no longer necessary, but all are equal in God’s eyes. What a powerful statement that continues to remain counter-cultural even 2000+ years later!
In present-day America, we find ourselves in a power-hungry culture with unrealistic expectations to over-produce and the pressures of social media that constantly compel us to compare, judge, and compete. Amidst this American strife, may we find a balm in Paul’s transcendent and radical words. There are no actions and there are no identities that we must oblige in order to receive the all-encompassing love of God – what a beautiful and compelling gift! May this truth gift you with solace and worth as you navigate the expectations of this world.
Summer Devotional
God Goes With Us
This summer’s devotional is a walk through the Bible. Join our pastors and staff for daily reflections on scripture passages from Genesis to Revelation. In the beginning, God said, “I will be your God and you will be my people.” Come and see how this covenant promise changes through time yet remains steadfast from generation to generation.
Each Sunday, Chris Holmes will share a short message on the texts for the week, and written reflections will go out every Monday through Thursday morning.
We wish you blessings and deeper faith this summer!
