Since its opening in September, Community Ministries is thrilled to invite the entire congregation to volunteer in the newly renovated Venable Food Market! Volunteers in the Food Market assist with sorting and stocking shelves, helping clients select groceries, and bagging items for clients. foOt Care

Community Ministries is excited to be restarting the historic Foot Care Ministry at First Presbyterian Church of Atlanta! This essential service supports our neighbors, many of whom rely on walking as their primary mode of transportation. Our Foot Care volunteers provide non-clinical care, helping to keep clients' feet clean, healthy, and comfortable. If you’re interested in volunteering with Foot Care, please complete the inquiry form here!

Prayer team

We are bringing prayer back to the prayer breakfast! Every Sunday, our clients at the breakfast have an opportunity to fill out prayer cards. We are in need of volunteers of any age who feel a call to pray over these requests throughout the week. You can either pick up the prayer requests on Sunday from 8:30-10:00am or Monday from 1-3 from the Community Ministries Mail Room, or they can be scanned to your email address. If you’re interested in volunteering, please sign up here!

Partner Spotlight: Atlanta Center for Self Sufficiency

ACSS is one of the largest and most successful providers of Workforce Development resources to Atlanta residents. Since 2010, their programs have served more than 2,500 people, and more than 1,500 have obtained full-time employment. Their mission is “to empower financially vulnerable individuals in our community to become self-sufficient, sustainably employed contributors to society.” Their work is “driven by a clear purpose and a compelling vision for a more equitable future.”

The biggest thing they strive to do is help clients who want to get a job. Their Boot Camps are one of the best ways to accomplish this. A Boot Camp consists of presentations that let people know the best way to show up to job interviews and how to improve their digital skills. These Boot Camps also teach decision making, resumes, elevator speeches, and financial management. Outside of Boot Camps, the ACSS coaches work one-on-one to help clients find jobs and other employment resources. ACSS is currently expanding outreach to go where people already go for other services, to give them more options in terms of where they can receive assistance and support.

We are proud and thankful to be partnering with the Atlanta Center for Self Sufficiency! Because of this partnership, we have been able to offer our clients classes on computer literacy and one-on-one assistance.

Women’s Transformation Center & Donation Needs

The construction of the WTC is now complete, and preparations for our winter opening are in full swing. To ensure a welcoming and comfortable environment for our future residents, we are stocking essential items specifically tailored to meet their needs. Our goal is to provide everything necessary to create a restful space that supports their journey towards self-sufficiency.

We invite you to support this initiative by considering a donation from our Amazon Wishlist. Your generous contributions will play a vital role in making the WTC a hospitable home for the women we serve. Thank you in advance for your support!

Staff Spotlight: Beverly Heath

What is your role with Community Ministries?

I currently serve as a Ministry Coordinator, handling a range of administrative and volunteer duties, and ensuring my department and team are organized. From volunteering at the Sunday Morning Prayer breakfast, to ordering supplies, revamping the filing system and filling in as an appointment setter for our Community Ministries Case Management services, I basically fill the role of an office manager. I work to be the go-to person for whatever my team needs. However, If I can’t get it, I find someone who can. I strive to offer encouragement and foster; I try to keep the spirits up around here.

Within the church, I manage the room and space reservations using the Planning Center tool. It also includes reservations for facilities set ups and any audio-visual resources you need. I am also responsible for updating access for our building and our parking deck.

What drew you into working with First Presbyterian Church of Atlanta?

During a job search I discovered the position at First Presbyterian. Because I previously worked at Habitat for Humanity, I wanted to remain in the non-profit sector, and when the opportunity to work at the church, it fit perfectly with my goals.

What drew you in to working with Community Ministries?

Tricia recommended that I join the team. I have been with the church since January 2018 and as a result of restructuring, administrative roles were being consolidated. Community Ministries’ Administrator had recently resigned and Tricia saw an opportunity to bring me onboard.

I love working with the Community Ministries team. It has allowed me to have access to the people portion of what this church does. I am able to see and have a hand in the client experience, which is what I love to do. Being able to see what is happening firsthand has been really uplifting and makes me continue to want to do it.

How long have you been with Community Ministries?

I only came on board August 2023, but my transition into the department has been so seamless, it feels like I’ve been a part of this team forever!

What is your favorite part about working within Community Ministries?

I really love working with this team because it has allowed me to connect with the clients through prayer, which I feel is a part of my calling. It has been an opportunity to minister and to build a rapport and genuine relationship with our clients, learning their names and some of their stories, and seeing them as more than faces and names on a paper.

There is a sense of purpose to the work here and I feel like I contribute to it. We see people struggling to survive, and it is a privilege to be a part of changing their stories for the better and hopefully inspiring them to do better on their own. It is really an uplifting job. This team genuinely cares, and to be a part of that is amazing. They go the extra mile, and it inspires me to also go the extra mile.

We are blessed to have Beverly here with us at Community Ministries! Thank you for all that you do for us and all of the prayers you have shared. It would not be the same without you!

Client Spotlight: Marcus

How long have you been coming to CM?

Oh gosh, I cannot remember... since 2018

What made you choose CM?

Things had just gone downhill. I was sleeping in Midtown, and someone stole my shoes. Midtown police department was doing their rounds, and I told them what happened. They told me to go down to 16th street since they have a closet. I walked here on my tip toes, literally. I got here and met Lincoln and it’s been a wrap ever since!

Those police officers didn’t have to say anything. They went out of their way to make sure I had the information I needed. I have seen them since, and I have thanked them every time. The lady officer would advocate and tell everyone about First Presbyterian when she saw someone in need.

What made you stick around?

Quite a few things. The services, the people, meeting Tricia and the other staff at the time. Everything that the church does for us and the community. I loved coming to the morning breakfast. It was a reminder of the things I needed to handle during the week.

What made you want to volunteer here?
I was volunteering at another church that closed down; I started coming here more often. I thought maybe I should switch my volunteer time over here because I had a bunch of ideas for improvements. I asked Tricia, she talked to Jacob, and now here I am.

What service is your favorite to volunteer?

Clothing closet because my background is fashion retail, so I am familiar with the whole look. I was at it for 15 years, did high-end and low-end, tons of companies. The clients now come to me for advice quite often!

We are thankful for Marcus and all that he has done and is doing to help Community Ministries!

Community Ministries Staff Introductions: Tricia Passuth

What is your role with Community Ministries?

I am the Director of Community Ministries. I oversee all direct services with clients, and I oversee our social workers and the social work interns.

How long have you been with CM?

I have been here 9 years since September.

What is your favorite part of working for CM?

There’s so much. One is that we are able to become somebody’s constant. They know we are always going to be here and accept them no matter what. People come in here and trust us at their most vulnerable, and to see the resiliency of the people we work with amazes me.

What drew you in to work with CM?

Throughout my career, I always worked with people who have experienced homelessness to some degree: an advocate for children in foster care, working with homeless teens, some invisible population of people who are often ignored and who are misunderstood. When I moved here from New Jersey, it was a perfect fit of all my skills and passion.

What is your favorite thing to help clients with?

One of my very favorite memories is that we were able to reunite this mother with her children about 3 years ago. She had been on a missing persons list since 2014. She was not using her real name, but one day she had come in with paperwork from the hospital with her real name on it. So, I looked her up and saw her on the missing persons list and found a Facebook profile set up for her. Her kids had not seen her since they were 4 and 6, but they were able to come see her and talk to her. While she is still experiencing homelessness, her aunt will call to check on her and her family in Michigan will send her Christmas gifts.

We are so thankful and blessed to have Tricia here with us at Community Ministries! Thank you, Tricia, for your hard work and dedication to our clients. We could not do it without you!

Volunteer position spotlight: Mailroom

We are thrilled to be able to offer mail services to over 1600 registered clients. Our amazing Mail Associate volunteers are responsible for organizing, sorting, and delivering client's mail. They are also responsible for filing client mail agreements and assisting in the update of the active client mail list, and sorting Return to Sender mail.

We are in need of volunteers to help us lead this ministry!

Our main need is Sunday mornings from 8:00am-10:00am. If that is not possible, we also run on Monday-Thursday from 1:00pm-3:00pm. This volunteer position is suitable for individuals of all backgrounds and experience levels. However, it is not ideally suited for young children.

I personally love the connections. I enjoy all of the different people I get to meet: our variety of clients and my fellow volunteers! I really love volunteering at the church.
— Linda Freeman

Client Spotlight: Gregory

How long have you been coming to CM?

Since September or October of last year.

What services do you use the most?

I use the mail service, sandwich bags, and the showers. Yall are one of the only places to clean up over on this side of town.

Which service helps you the most/ do you enjoy the most?

I like the Sunday Breakfast the most out of everything because I get to sit and talk with other homeless people around. When you get to be a certain age, it gets to where things don’t really bother you anymore. You can just be calm, come in and get what you need, and not get in the way.

Thank you, Gregory, for always being a calm presence! We always enjoy being able to serve our clients, and we can only do that because of your donations.

Workdays: A Success with More to Come!

The first two summer volunteer workday were successful! On our first workday with the help of the FPC College Group, we were able to move all the necessary items from Fifield Hall to our brand-new space on the first floor of the Smith Building. On our second workday, with the help of 14 volunteers, we successfully completed reorganizing the Clothing Corner shelving.

In fact, the summer workdays were such a success that after many requests Community Ministries will begin hosting them monthly!

If you or anyone else, you know is interested we will begin hosting workdays monthly every second Sunday of the month! This means that our next workday will be August 11th from 1pm to 3pm. Another upcoming workday will be held from 1pm to 3pm on September 8th. No prior training is required!

Volunteers will meet on the first floor of the Smith Building in the Charles Black and Connie Lee Community Ministries Center.

Those interested in volunteering for a workday can sign-up using the link below.

Urgent Need: Underwear

Underwear is something that we often take for granted in our day-to-day life. Many of our Community Ministries neighbors struggle to find clean underwear on a regular basis and frequently look to resources like Community Ministries to provide it.

As the summer months heat up and Community Ministries clients frequent Community Ministries facilities more and more, underwear has become a scarce resource.

This month please consider donating new men’s or women’s underwear in the following sizes:

-             Small

-             Medium

-             Large

-             XL

All donations can be mailed to the church and addressed to Community Ministries or brought to the church’s rear security entrance off Art Center Way, Monday through Thursday between 9:00 am and 3:00 pm, or on Sundays between 9:00 am and 12:00 pm.

Meet the Team: Olivia Brueggemeyer, Case Manager

What is your role with Community Ministries?

“I am a social worker and I assist clients in getting their vital documents, connecting them with other community and government programs, and providing them with general case management when needed.”

How long have you been with Community Ministries?

“I have been with Community Ministries since July 2022.”

What is your favorite part of working for Community Ministries?

“My favorite part of working in Community Ministries is getting to witness our clients' growth. It is always an honor to be part of someone getting the job they have been working towards, moving into their new apartment, or finally taking the step towards treatment. I love seeing our clients get excited about the direction their lives are moving in.”

You are one of the social workers in charge of the Women’s Transition Center. What excites you the most about the Women’s Transition Center?

I am most excited about the opportunities we will be able to give the women who are living at the transition center. We are excited to provide them with a safe and comfortable place to live, while they are working to get back on their feet but we want to go above and beyond this. We have big hopes and plans to provide them with education opportunities, budgeting assistance, and fun extracurricular activities that will instill self-care and a sense of normalcy in an uncertain time for them.”

Updates on the Smith Building: The Women’s Transition Center

Construction in the Smith building is ongoing, with a particular focus on the 4th floor, designated for the women's transition center. Fixtures, lights, and final touches are being meticulously installed as this impactful ministry space takes shape.

The women's transition center is designed to accommodate up to 8 women who have previously had housing but currently require a place to stay while they work. The center aims to provide a safe and secure environment for  women to reestablish their lives

Moreover, the women's transition center will feature a family apartment to accommodate families with children in need of temporary shelter. Each client will have their own fully furnished efficiency apartment, complete with a kitchenette and private bathroom. The transition center will also include a shared common area with two fully functional kitchens, a laundry room, and a conference room for group meetings.

Hygiene is a crucial aspect of everyone's daily life, and Community Ministries ensures that our clients have the necessary items for proper hygiene as part of our diverse services. Volunteers have the opportunity to brighten someone's day by participating in the hygiene closet, distributing items such as deodorant, toothpaste, and socks to clients. Many volunteers form lasting relationships with both clients and fellow volunteers while working in the hygiene closet.

Hygiene closet volunteers play a crucial role in ensuring clients receive their requested items while also maintaining cleanliness and order in the hygiene closet. Currently, the hygiene closet operates from Fifield Hall on Tuesdays and Thursdays, between 1:00 pm and 3:00 pm.

Updates on the Smith Building: Moving Day!

In an exciting development, Community Ministries has officially moved its offices to the second floor of the Smith Building and Charles Black and Connie Lee Community Ministries Center! While services are still taking place in Fifield Hall for the immediate future, Community Ministries staff are very grateful for the opportunity to access and use the newly renovated space in the Smith Building.

Upon its complete opening, the second floor will house all three Community Ministries social workers, provide a space for community partners to meet with clients, and include a computer lab for Community Ministries clients.

Volunteer Experience Survey

We need your voice! Community Ministries is seeking input from current and past volunteers for a volunteer experience survey. This survey will help inform upcoming initiatives related to the Community Ministries volunteer experience and contribute to the improvement of the services we already offer.

If you have moment please fill out the survey below! The survey should take no longer than 5 minutes to complete. All survey responses are anonymous and confidential, exclusively used for Community Ministries purposes.

Volunteer Role Spotlight: Sandwich Bags

Did you know Community Ministries provides sack lunches to over 600 people every week? Volunteers who make and donate sandwich bags play a crucial role in our ability to provide food to clients regularly. Those contributing as sandwich bag volunteers are responsible for purchasing the necessary supplies, assembling the bags, and delivering them to the church. Donations of sandwich bags can be brought to the church from Monday to Thursday, between 8:00 am and 11:30 am.

Typically, sandwich bags include a PB & J sandwich or a Ham & Cheese sandwich, accompanied by a small bag of chips, a granola bar, an individually wrapped fruit snack, and an optional encouraging or inspirational note.

Creating sandwich bags is an excellent opportunity for volunteers who prefer tasks they can complete at home or with their family.

Welcome! This initial newsletter is an exciting opportunity for the congregation at First Presbyterian Church of Atlanta to take a closer look at the ongoings of Community Ministries and the incredible ways one can get involved! Community Ministries is a ministry of First Presbyterian Church of Atlanta dedicated to serving those experiencing homelessness and those in transition in Midtown Atlanta and beyond. Every week, Community Ministries can expect to serve over 600 clients through social services, feeding ministries, the Clothing Corner, the Hospitality Closet, and the Mailroom.

Read on for updates on the Smith Building, the success of last month’s MLK Day workday, and the awesome volunteer opportunities available for those looking to connect with the church community while helping our neighbors!

Updates on the Smith Building: The First Floor & The Clothing Corner

Construction is ongoing in the Smith Building. The first floor, which contains the Charles Black and Connie Lee Community Ministries Center housing the Food Market, Hospitality Closet, Clothing Corner, and mailroom, is complete with the final touches being put in place. The third floor is also finished with work continuing on the second and fourth floors. A heartfelt thank you to all the volunteers who have played a crucial role in the ongoing transition of the Clothing Corner to the Smith Building. We have successfully initiated operations in the new Clothing Corner, formerly the Clothing Closet, on a limited basis, and the response has been overwhelmingly positive.

Volunteers and clients alike appreciate the new space, fostering a renewed sense of gratitude for the impactful work conducted in the Clothing Corner. Tracie and Fenton, two of our first clients in the Clothing Corner, were grateful for the new space and the opportunity it provided them to freely ‘shop’ for new clothing. Tracie and Fenton are just a few of the clients we have served in the new Clothing Corner: In just the past two weeks, both volunteers and staff have served over 40 clients in the Clothing Corner!

Donations of clothes are still needed for the Clothing Corner. Community Ministries will accept donations of used clothing items that are in good condition, as well as used shoes, belts, and bags. If you are interested in donating clothes, shoes, or accessories, please email Jacob Ivey at jivey@firstpresatl.org.

Stay tuned for further updates on the progress of the second, and fourth floors as construction continues!

Martin Luther King Jr. Day Workday

Thanks to leadership of volunteer Caroline Wainright and the support of the Community Ministries Council the Martin Luther King Jr. Day Workday was a huge success! We had over 70 volunteers in attendance, ranging in ages, working diligently on a variety of projects including blanket making, putting together hospitality bags, organizing the Clothing Corner, making sandwiches, organizing the library, and stocking the Hospitality Closet. Volunteers also had the opportunity to hear a wonderfully informative presentation from Community Ministries Director Tricia Passuth on the challenges faced by our clients and the reality of homelessness in Atlanta.

While services on the first floor of the newly renovated Smith Building and Charles Black and Connie Lee Community Ministries Center are yet to open, except for the Clothing Corner, everything is set up, thanks to the incredible efforts on MLK Day. The Hospitality Closet and library are fully stocked and ready for operation once the building opens. Thank you to everyone who volunteered on MLK Day! It is volunteers like you that make what Community Ministries does possible!

Volunteer Role spotlight: The Clothing Corner

Volunteers play a crucial role in our Clothing Corner, acting as greeters and personal shoppers for Community Ministries clients who use the Clothing Corner. Additionally volunteers assist in keeping records and restocking clothing. The Clothing Corner is open on Mondays and Thursdays from 1:00 pm to 3:00 pm.

Since operating in the new Smith Building, the Clothing Corner offers clean clothes to Community Ministries clients in a market-style setting. Clients can freely choose which items of clothing they would like and even try them on in our fitting room.

The Clothing Corner is an excellent space to interact with clients directly in a comfortable and relaxed environment. Volunteering in the Clothing Corner is also fun if you have a good sense of fashion, love for shopping and enjoy interacting with other volunteers!
