Today’s Scripture
Today’s Author
Chris Holmes
Genesis is a book of beginnings. It opens the anthology of writings we call the Bible. It narrates the start of God’s covenanting relationship with humanity, first with Noah, and then with Abraham. And, of course, it tells of the beginnings of the earth and sea, sun and moon, birds and humans and all crawling things.
It is fitting that our “Go with God” devotional begins with this book of beginnings. Genesis 1:1–25 provides the first of two creation narratives, and it has fascinated theologians and church folk alike for ages. And it has generated a good bit of controversy, as well. Did God really create the whole universe in seven days? Did God create “out of nothing” or did God fashion existing materials into creation as we know it? Those are questions for another day. Above all, the creation story teaches us about God and God’s dealings with the world.
What, then, do we learn? “And God saw that it was good.” After each phase of the creation story, God steps back, observes the created thing, and says, “It’s good.” Light is good. The stars and moon are good. The sea is good. Plants are good. Animals are good. God both recognizes and bestows goodness on creation.
So, go with God into the goodness of creation. Into the goodness of morning walks or evening conversations on the porch. Go with God to the serene mountains or the beach’s churning waves. Go with God to the goodness of chirping birds and green plants in your yard. Go with God into creation, for it is good.
Summer Devotional
God Goes With Us
This summer’s devotional is a walk through the Bible. Join our pastors and staff for daily reflections on scripture passages from Genesis to Revelation. In the beginning, God said, “I will be your God and you will be my people.” Come and see how this covenant promise changes through time yet remains steadfast from generation to generation.
Each Sunday, Chris Holmes will share a short message on the texts for the week, and written reflections will go out every Monday through Thursday morning.
We wish you blessings and deeper faith this summer!
