Today’s Scripture

Exodus 1

Today’s Author

Tony Sundermeier

Did you notice in this chapter how sin begets sin?

First comes enslavement. Egypt enslaves the people of Israel (see 11,13).

Then comes ethnic cleansing. All newborn Hebrew children should be drowned in the Nile (see 16, 22).

Sin is treacherous this way. Unless it is dealt with, sin will multiply. Sin begets sin. Sin escalates into more sin and more sin after that. Sin has this habit of systemizing and perpetuating itself.

The cross of Jesus Christ interrupts sin’s treachery. It represents God’s “No” to sin and breaks its perpetuating cycles.

What sin in your life needs to be interrupted? What cycles need to be disrupted? And remember…

This is the message we have heard from him and proclaim to you, that God is light and in him there is no darkness at all. If we say that we have fellowship with him while we are walking in darkness, we lie and do not do what is true; but if we walk in the light as he himself is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus his Son cleanses us from all sin. If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, he who is faithful and just will forgive us our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness. If we say that we have not sinned, we make him a liar, and his word is not in us (1 John 1:6-8).

Summer Devotional

God Goes With Us

This summer’s devotional is a walk through the Bible. Join our pastors and staff for daily reflections on scripture passages from Genesis to Revelation. In the beginning, God said, “I will be your God and you will be my people.” Come and see how this covenant promise changes through time yet remains steadfast from generation to generation.

Each Sunday, Chris Holmes will share a short message on the texts for the week, and written reflections will go out every Monday through Thursday morning.

We wish you blessings and deeper faith this summer!
