Women’s Transformation Center Update
The Women’s Transformation Center (WTC) is now accepting applications! Three women have officially moved into our newly renovated Center!
After women submit their application, Tricia and Olivia will conduct an interview to determine their fitness for the program. Requirements include working a minimum of twenty hours a week and being single. This process takes about two weeks. Once they move in, they must participate in weekly case managements with Olivia and begin to save thirty percent of their paycheck. Living in the WTC allows for women to focus on working towards their education or career training.
Thank you to everyone who has donated their time and finances. This could not have been possible without your continuous support!
MLK Retrospective
Thank you for volunteering this Martin Luther King Jr. Day 2025 with First Presbyterian Church of Atlanta! We had incredibly meaningful time of service working together as a community to not only serve our neighbors here in Midtown but across Atlanta!
Thanks to your efforts, we accomplished the following:
Compiled over 500 hygiene kits.
Assembled more than 150 refugee support kits.
Crafted 20+ blankets.
Produced over 500 sandwiches.
Cleaned the Smith Building and Fifield kitchen.
Collectively completed over 330 hours of community service.
Client Spotlight: N.O.
N.O. has been a wonderful neighbor and part of our volunteer team. He has been vital in encouraging others, especially to play chess! We are so thankful and blessed to have N.O. as a part of our team and neighborhood.
How long have you been coming to Community Ministries?
Since last November. We had a house fire, so I’ve been out ever since.
What is the service you use the most?
The showers and the clothing. Everyone needs clothing and to bathe.
Why did you choose here?
Everyone has been helpful. Being here gives you a chance to meet interesting people. I have also been able to better myself because I'm not where I want to be. The staff is amazing and helpful. Jacob has been good to me, trying to help me with housing. I trust that it will all come together.
New Volunteer Opportunities: Food Market & Foot Care

Jean Drive
First Presbyterian Church of Atlanta is committed to helping the unhoused in our community with a Jean Drive! Jeans can be preferable for our clients as they are often more durable and warmer than other clothes. They can be worn days at a time without looking dirty, and they are often donated back to be washed and placed back in our Clothing Closet! Even so, it is hard for us to stay stocked on jeans, especially men’s. Therefore, Community Ministries would like to stock up on jeans for our clients to be a little more comfortable and safer outside. Any items donated should be new or gently used and clean.
Donations can be dropped off:
Sunday’s between 8:00am & 1:00pm.
Monday through Thursday between 9:00am & 3:00pm
In the designated bins located in the Smith Building Lobby.
Sizes:
We need a mixture of sizes for to best fit our clients’ needs.
Men and Women jeans are needed in all different sizes!

Women’s Transformation Center Update
The Women’s Transformation Center reopening has been in the works for some time, so we are thrilled to announce it is officially taking applications! We have already received a few applications, and we hope to begin moving people in within the next few weeks.
This would not have been possible without your support, donations, and prayers. A special thank you to those who came to help on our workdays where we cleaned and set up the apartments and common spaces so that those who move in can feel right at home.
Please direct all questions or concerns regarding the WTC to Tricia Passuth at tpassuth@firstpresatl.org or Olivia Bruggemeyer at obrueggemeyer@firstpresatl.org.
Special Spotlight: Sargent Rollins
Sargent Rollins is our in-house APD officer during the week. He helps to keep all of us safe and has been a tremendous blessing to Community Ministries!
How long have you been coming here?
About two months.
Do you like helping here? Why?
I like helping people. Some people are less fortunate, so I like to put a smile on their face and just make their day better.
What has been your favorite part and best memory?
I have enjoyed handing out the Sandwich Bags and making sure everyone is safe. I like sweeping and mopping. Just helping out, really. I like working with a great set of people, and you all have the same goal: to help.
My favorite memory would be helping at the Christmas Dinner. Everything went well and smoothly. We served like 200-250 people. Everybody was fed, and they enjoyed the food. Watching the staff and volunteers run together to make it a success with no hiccups was impressive.
Volunteer Coffee Hour
Driver needed!
Community Ministries is currently looking for a driver to pick up sandwiches twice a week from our community partners at the Sandwich Project. The times for this position will vary week to week and can work around your schedule. These sandwiches will be served to our neighbors in Community Ministries and play a vital roll in providing a temporary source of sustenance for those in need.
If you are interested please email Jacob Ivey at jivey@firstpresatl.org for further details.

Community Ministries Newsletter: December
December 2, 2024
We are excited to bring you the latest edition of the Community Ministries newsletter! Community Ministries is a ministry of First Presbyterian Church of Atlanta dedicated to serving those experiencing homelessness and those in transition in Midtown Atlanta and beyond. Every week, Community Ministries can expect to serve over 600 clients through social services, feeding ministries, the Clothing Corner, the Hospitality Closet, and the Mailroom.
Continue reading for an update on our Women’s Transformation Center, a Special Holiday Prayer Breakfast, the Winter Clothing Drive, and a holiday party invitation for all our wonderful volunteers!
Special Holiday Prayer Breakfast
Originally founded in 1981, the Prayer Breakfast at First Presbyterian Church of Atlanta is a well-known part of FPC’s ministry to our unhoused neighbors. During the breakfast, our neighbors can grab a warm meal and engage in fellowship with one another, and the volunteers present. The Prayer Breakfast not only aims to meet the human needs of our unhoused neighbors but also to address the spiritual needs of everyone involved in the breakfast through active community and fellowship.
As the holiday season creeps closer and closer, we are working to bring the Christmas Spirit to our neighbors! Therefore, on December 22, we will be holding a special Christmas Prayer Breakfast! At this breakfast, along with a hot meal, we will give out gifts and Christmas cards to celebrate advent as a community.
The breakfast is held at 1328 Peachtree Street in Fifield Hall from 6:30am to 7:45am. Volunteers are expected to arrive by 6:00am and leave by 8:15am. If you would like to volunteer for our special Christmas Breakfast, please use the button below!
Prayer at the Prayer Breakfast
Community Ministries are always focused on our clients' needs. With each service we offer, our goal is to fulfill a basic need that they are unable to fill elsewhere. Being able to share what is heavy on your heart with a trusted spiritual advisor can be hard to find, but with our Prayer Breakfast, we have been able to grow a spiritual community with our clients. As clients enjoy a hot meal, they can fill out a prayer card. We are then able to pray over these requests as the week continues and speak directly with the client about their request if they would like. When COVID hit, we were unable to continue this work. Since we have now gotten our Prayer Breakfast back into full swing, we are able to bring prayer back to the Prayer Breakfast!
Don’t just take it from us, here are two spotlights talking about why prayer is important and how this ministry is directly impacting our clients:
Pastor Robert Sparks: Pastor Rob is the Associate Pastor for Care here at FCPA
Why is prayer important to you?
The Apostle Paul told the Thessalonians to, "Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, give thanks in all circumstances, for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.” The Westminster Shorter Catechism teaches that, "Prayer is an offering up of our desires unto God, for things agreeable to God's will, in the name of Christ, with confession of our sins, and thankful acknowledgment of his mercies.” As a person of faith, prayer is a regular exercise whereby my will is knit to God’s so that I might draw closer in faith. Prayer is most often associated with worship, but I believe that service to others is a form of active worship and prayer should always be at the heart of Community Ministries.
How do you pray?
Publicly and privately. As a worship leader and pastor I’m responsible praying for the people of God. I usually write those prayers in advance because I believe the Holy Spirit can show up in my study just as readily as in the moment. I am often asked to pray with and for people in our chapel and I offer to pray at the hospital; in those instances, the prayers are led by God’s Spirit. I pray at home as well, before meals, and in silent meditation.
Why is prayer at the Breakfast important?
I think it’s especially important to give thanks for the food we’re about to receive, to offer gratitude for the volunteers and donors who make the meal possible, and to pray for the health and safety of all of the people in our community. Each Sunday, First Presbyterian celebrates the start of the week, on the Sabbath with multiple worship, educational, and fellowship opportunities that stretch into the evening. The first public word of prayer spoke at First, each and every week, is the prayer before breakfast!
Darren: Darren is a beloved neighbor of Community Ministries and often utilizes our services
Why do you like prayer?
I grew up in a praying family, so I like prayer. I was taught to watch and pray. It changes things; I’ve seen it. They say to be careful who you let pray for you or lay hands on you. To me, prayer is part of survival. I believe highly in communicating with God and the best way to do that is with prayer. I can talk to God myself, but unity is strength. I can pray alone, but ten people praying together is strength.
Why is prayer at the Breakfast important?
It might be the only place where someone asks them what they need, how can they be prayed for. They might not have it in themselves to pray every day, or they may not have someone who prays for them consistently. Some people use the prayer request form, others don’t. But people are doing it. Hold your head up and pray to God because God changes things.

Partner Spotlight: Atlanta Center for Self Sufficiency
ACSS is one of the largest and most successful providers of Workforce Development resources to Atlanta residents. Since 2010, their programs have served more than 2,500 people, and more than 1,500 have obtained full-time employment. Their mission is “to empower financially vulnerable individuals in our community to become self-sufficient, sustainably employed contributors to society.” Their work is “driven by a clear purpose and a compelling vision for a more equitable future.”
The biggest thing they strive to do is help clients who want to get a job. Their Boot Camps are one of the best ways to accomplish this. A Boot Camp consists of presentations that let people know the best way to show up to job interviews and how to improve their digital skills. These Boot Camps also teach decision making, resumes, elevator speeches, and financial management. Outside of Boot Camps, the ACSS coaches work one-on-one to help clients find jobs and other employment resources. ACSS is currently expanding outreach to go where people already go for other services, to give them more options in terms of where they can receive assistance and support.
We are proud and thankful to be partnering with the Atlanta Center for Self Sufficiency! Because of this partnership, we have been able to offer our clients classes on computer literacy and one-on-one assistance.
Women’s Transformation Center & Donation Needs
The construction of the WTC is now complete, and preparations for our winter opening are in full swing. To ensure a welcoming and comfortable environment for our future residents, we are stocking essential items specifically tailored to meet their needs. Our goal is to provide everything necessary to create a restful space that supports their journey towards self-sufficiency.
We invite you to support this initiative by considering a donation from our Amazon Wishlist. Your generous contributions will play a vital role in making the WTC a hospitable home for the women we serve. Thank you in advance for your support!
Staff Spotlight: Beverly Heath
What is your role with Community Ministries?
I currently serve as a Ministry Coordinator, handling a range of administrative and volunteer duties, and ensuring my department and team are organized. From volunteering at the Sunday Morning Prayer breakfast, to ordering supplies, revamping the filing system and filling in as an appointment setter for our Community Ministries Case Management services, I basically fill the role of an office manager. I work to be the go-to person for whatever my team needs. However, If I can’t get it, I find someone who can. I strive to offer encouragement and foster; I try to keep the spirits up around here.
Within the church, I manage the room and space reservations using the Planning Center tool. It also includes reservations for facilities set ups and any audio-visual resources you need. I am also responsible for updating access for our building and our parking deck.
What drew you into working with First Presbyterian Church of Atlanta?
During a job search I discovered the position at First Presbyterian. Because I previously worked at Habitat for Humanity, I wanted to remain in the non-profit sector, and when the opportunity to work at the church, it fit perfectly with my goals.
What drew you in to working with Community Ministries?
Tricia recommended that I join the team. I have been with the church since January 2018 and as a result of restructuring, administrative roles were being consolidated. Community Ministries’ Administrator had recently resigned and Tricia saw an opportunity to bring me onboard.
I love working with the Community Ministries team. It has allowed me to have access to the people portion of what this church does. I am able to see and have a hand in the client experience, which is what I love to do. Being able to see what is happening firsthand has been really uplifting and makes me continue to want to do it.
How long have you been with Community Ministries?
I only came on board August 2023, but my transition into the department has been so seamless, it feels like I’ve been a part of this team forever!
What is your favorite part about working within Community Ministries?
I really love working with this team because it has allowed me to connect with the clients through prayer, which I feel is a part of my calling. It has been an opportunity to minister and to build a rapport and genuine relationship with our clients, learning their names and some of their stories, and seeing them as more than faces and names on a paper.
There is a sense of purpose to the work here and I feel like I contribute to it. We see people struggling to survive, and it is a privilege to be a part of changing their stories for the better and hopefully inspiring them to do better on their own. It is really an uplifting job. This team genuinely cares, and to be a part of that is amazing. They go the extra mile, and it inspires me to also go the extra mile.
We are blessed to have Beverly here with us at Community Ministries! Thank you for all that you do for us and all of the prayers you have shared. It would not be the same without you!
Client Spotlight: Marcus
How long have you been coming to CM?
Oh gosh, I cannot remember... since 2018
What made you choose CM?
Things had just gone downhill. I was sleeping in Midtown, and someone stole my shoes. Midtown police department was doing their rounds, and I told them what happened. They told me to go down to 16th street since they have a closet. I walked here on my tip toes, literally. I got here and met Lincoln and it’s been a wrap ever since!
Those police officers didn’t have to say anything. They went out of their way to make sure I had the information I needed. I have seen them since, and I have thanked them every time. The lady officer would advocate and tell everyone about First Presbyterian when she saw someone in need.
What made you stick around?
Quite a few things. The services, the people, meeting Tricia and the other staff at the time. Everything that the church does for us and the community. I loved coming to the morning breakfast. It was a reminder of the things I needed to handle during the week.
What made you want to volunteer here?
I was volunteering at another church that closed down; I started coming here more often. I thought maybe I should switch my volunteer time over here because I had a bunch of ideas for improvements. I asked Tricia, she talked to Jacob, and now here I am.
What service is your favorite to volunteer?
Clothing closet because my background is fashion retail, so I am familiar with the whole look. I was at it for 15 years, did high-end and low-end, tons of companies. The clients now come to me for advice quite often!
We are thankful for Marcus and all that he has done and is doing to help Community Ministries!
